What I'm Reading | OCTOBER

Wednesday, October 20, 2021

Why is it you can go for months not knowing what to read, and then suddenly you've got 3 books on the go at once and 2 more screaming at you from your Netgalley shelf that you can't wait to read?
Just me? Oh, awkward!

That being said, I thought I'd share my current to be read list-in the interest of keeping myself accountable, she says knowing full well she's a mood reader and TBR lists mean squat if she's not in the mood 🙄.

So...

Currently Reading: Fiction

Girl A by Abigail Dean

Girl A is apparently the "biggest mystery thriller since Gone Girl". It's about a woman named Lex who escaped her terrible home life at the age of 15, and now after a death in the family finds herself being pulled back to the family home.

I'm not that far into the story yet (3 chapters) so so far nothing particularly mysterious or thrilling has happened but I live in hope.

Currently Reading: Non-Fiction

The Guilty Feminist by Deborah Frances-White

I picked this one up whilst strolling through Spitalfields market the other day, from the loveliest guy-seriously if you're in the area you should pop in and have a nose around. I also picked up More Letters of Note by Shaun Usher which I can't wait to peruse.

The Guilty Feminist is a book compiled by the lady who hosts the podcast of the same name, and having never actually listened to the podcast I was a little wary of "white feminism" but I am happy to report that the feminism in this book is intersectional, inclusive, and best of all judgement free!

Currently Reading: Kindle

Sunburn: The unofficial history of the Sun newspaper in 99 headlines by James Felton

First of all, let me preface this by saying DON'T BUY THE SUN. It's gross, and it's fickle, and it's not even news so why would you waste your money?!
Nowhere is this more apparent than in the pages of Sunburn.

The best thing about this book is that it's not making stuff up! Sure it's subjective and there is probably some bias in the breakdowns of each chapter BUT the headlines and stories, and words quoted are all actual things printed in this "newspaper" over the decades.

It makes for absolutely exasperating reading, with a healthy serving of James' irreverent humour.

Up Next: YA

How We Fall Apart by Katie Zhao (ARC. UK Publication Date: 11/11/21)

The squeal that came out of me when they announced How We Fall Apart was now available to request on Netgalley! I can't even tell you how excited I am for this book. I've been following Katie on Twitter for over a year now and the hype I feel for How We Fall Apart is unreal. Touted as Crazy Rich Asians meets One of Us is Lying, this book is about what happens when students at an elite prep school are forced to confront their secrets and each other when one of their ex-best friends shows up dead. If you are a fan of Karen M McManus this should be on your TBR.

Up Next: ??? I have no idea how to categorise this one-it's super secretive.

The Measure by Nikki Erlick (ARC. UK Publication Date: 07/07/22)

Okay, this one is a case of excellent marketing making me NEED to read a book. I'm just gonna share the premise because that's all it took for me to request it!

Your fate arrives in a box on your doorstep. Do you open it?

It seems like just another morning.

You make a cup of tea. Check the news. Open the front door.

On your doorstep is a box.

Inside the box is the exact number of years you have left to live.

The same box appears on every doorstep across the world.

Do you open yours?

The Measure
It's the decision of a lifetime.

And that's it, my current reading and up next! Of course instead of actually reading these books I am sat on my laptop writing this post, whilst watching a 24-year-old episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch 🤷.

What's on your TBR? Let me know, so I can inevitably add it to my ever-growing tower(s) of books!

Much Love
Aj xx
