Bucket Lists are a huge business! Almost everyone I know has one, whether it's written down or just a mental plan for things to do, and "bucket list" has become part of our everyday vernacular. In fact, mine is here if you want to read it, but today I'm doing one with a twist.
On the 4th of July, I turned 29...there's no denying it now, I am what society calls a proper adult! But whilst society deems me, "adult", it is also part of the reason I don't feel like I thought I would at this age. We are the generation that has had to live through recessions, ever growing house prices and the so-called brick ceiling. We are generation rent, we are the 20/30 somethings moving back in with our parents so we can save a bit of cash. How are we supposed to knock things off our bucket lists when approx 45% of our salary goes on rent alone!?
This is why my bucket list has started to depress me, I look at it and think "you'll never own your own home at this rate", "nobody will let you adopt when you live in a one bed rental", "Petra will be dust by the time you can afford to visit"! So with that in mind, I decided to write the reverse bucket list, something to look at when I feel like I'm never moving forward, 29 Things I've Done in 29 Years if you will...
1) Fallen in Love- over and over again.
2) Been Loved
3) Seen Apollo's Temple
4) Stood in "the" Timotei waterfall
5) Done the West Highland Way for charity
6) Discovered a passion for politics
7) Spoke up for other people
8) Worn out 3 copies of Wuthering Heights
9) Watched a meteor shower
10) Found my forever Friends
11) Married a man who makes the world a little brighter for me
12) Carried a life inside of me
13) Camped in a random field with great people and the stars for company
14) Spent a whole day just reading a great book
15) Graduated University
16) Made mistakes
17) Removed bad influences from my life
18) Taken responsibility for my actions and decisions
19) Lived Alone
20) Sat on the banks of Loch Muick at sunset
21) Sang Karaoke
22) Seen Def Leppard & Whitesnake live
23) Danced, and splashed, and kissed in the rain
24) Achieved goals and made new goals
25) Had so much fun I'm still regaling people with stories years later!
26) Learned to juggle at circus classes
27) Queued for a midnight book release and smiled because for the first time in memory a book was important enough to warrant a midnight book release!
28) Finally realised that my weight is not an indicator of my worth
29) Dusted myself off and tried, and tried, and tried again!
Just writing this has made me feel better, I know that we are living in uncertain times but I also know now that no matter what life or society throws at us there are little things, little decisions that we do or make every day that can lead to us knocking things off a bucket list we didn't even realise we had.
What have you done lately that you are proud of? Do you think our generation have been given a raw deal? Please leave a comment, and come chat with me on Twitter as always.
Aw what a lovely post, so positive and optimistic. May the next 29 years be as fulfilling! Me, I'm proud that I recently cycled nearly 400 miles and climbed a mountain for charity. :)

DeleteGreat list Jess. It is amazing how many people worry about the future they cannot control and forget about the achievements of the past.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dusty!! I think we over look our achievements if they aren't the kind lauded by society as a whole. But you knew me when I was 16 I think we should all be proud I even made it to 29 lol xxx
