The Met Gala 2015 // Fashion's BIG Night // WOW or WTF?

Tuesday, May 05, 2015

Hi guys,

I realised it had been a while since I'd done a fashion post, which is a shame because I really enjoy them. With that in mind I think the Met Gala would be a great subject to dip my toe back into the fashion world with. Now everybody has their own opinions on the looks from last night's Met Gala, and these are just my own. If you disagree that is good, if you agree that is great, and if you just don;t care why on earth did you click on a post named "The Met Gala 2015..."???

Right with that out of the way here's my best and worst from the 2015 fete of fashion. Oh first I should probably mention that the theme of the night was "China: Through the looking Glass"...

Best "Naked" Dress

Kim Kardashian West in Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli is just beautiful! Naked dresses were popular once again this year, with Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and many more all taking on the tricky trend. But for me Kim K-W was the best on the night, there is a fine line between sexy and tacky (more on that later) and I think this is pure perfection. Like how is it actually possible to look angelic with that much skin on show??? Top marks!

Dakota Johnson in Chanel Haute Couture...WOW! I'll be the first to admit I just never saw the appeal of Dakota, I thought she was a bit bland and you know not all that attractive. Well colour me speechless because fucking WOW! She looks freaking outstanding here, the hair, the perfect winged eyeliner and freaking Chanel. JUST OUTSTANDING! Bravo. Of course at first view I thought she was phoning it on the theme a little bit, and then I realised her dress was literally made of little pieces of mirror. She is literally wearing the looking glass! Love!

Best Male

Adrien Brody in Dolce & Gabbana Alla Sartoria- now don;t get me wrong I was disappointed when I found out this was D&G but I couldn't not include it because this blazer is gorgeous. More often than not men fall into the trap of just wearing a black or navy suit to these events (because nobody really cares who or what they are wearing) but every so often someone steps up and says "fuck it, I'm going big or I'm going home" and this happens. Very smart, fits the theme perfectly, and stood out in a sea of boring suits. Well Done!

Best Theme Dress

Emily Ratajkowski in Custom Topshop- This is so pretty! I'm not Emily's biggest fan, mainly due to the fact that she starred in that music video I refuse to talk about in case I rant for days & she annoyed me in Gone Girl, but I will admit the girl is HOT! Like dirty hot! But here she looks so pretty it's melted my black heart a little. The China theme is subtle and the dress is modest and "affordable" but it stands out amongst all the other eccentric spins on the theme. Got my vote!

Best "what theme?" Dress

Alison Brie in Prabal Gurung- Every year without fail a heap of people completely ignore the theme and just wear whatever the hell they want to. Sometimes this is bland as all hell, ad the other times it looks like this! She is so freaking beautiful in this gown, I actually didn't recognise her at first (and now I realise that sounds mean :-/) but seriously she looks so different and so elegant so major fashion points to Alison.

The "Hot" Mess

Sarah Jessica Parker in H&M and Philip Treacy- I mean WTF is this?? Yes it fits the theme, yes in individual parts it MIGHT work, but together this is just a mess. SJP is a fashion queen and she constantly pushes boundaries but I just can't get on board with this look. Already a ton of memes have popped up ripping the piss out of this Philip Treacy headpiece and you can see why. Just NO, NO, NO!

Best Couple

Joshua Jackson in Alexander Mcqueen and Diane Kruger in Chanel- These two are such a beautiful couple and they always look on point! I love how soft her outfit looks despite the fact that she is wearing a tunic and trousers, and the navy of his suit perfectly complements the blush pink colour of hers. This is how you do His & Hers dressing, just FYI!

Xiao Wen Ju in Marc Jacobs- right, I love this look, I love Marc Jacobs, and I love how beautiful this woman is, BUT seriously you're two years too late love. This dress would have been FANTASTIC for the 2013 Met Gala, but for this year, I just don't get it. Saying that...can I please have this dress without the net part because I totally need it in my closet.

Best Shock of the Night

Madonna in Moschino- now I know this dress isn't shocking, BUT the fact that Madonna is wearing this dress really is. I don't know about you, but I've become so accustomed to rolling my eyes at Madonna's shock factor outfits that it all got a bit boring. And then she rocks up in something so "dare I say it" normal that I'm blown away. She looks amazing, she's not trying too hard and it works. Also, it's lovely to see that her accident at the Brit Awards hasn't put her off fabulous capes.

Still not Sure

Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein Collection- Seriously who thought she was going to be wearing anything but Calvin Klein?? At first I thought "Oh this is beautiful". Then I thought "like a pretty mermaid with major side-boob" and then the more I looked at it the more I started to notice the whole "mermaid caught in a fisherman's net" thing it has going on! It's so hard because this girl is just stunningly beautiful so she doesn't look bad in the dress, but I'm just not sure about the dress itself. Ask me again in a week.

Overhyped

Beyonce in Givenchy- I'm gonna get controversial here, because the internet seems to be having a wet one over this "look" BUT all I see is a barbie doll that's been dipped in glue and rolled around in those little candy balls you get on top of chocolate disco discs. I refer you to my previous comment on naked dresses treading the line between tacky and sexy, and THIS is just tacky. If she had a few more candy balls, covering a few more pieces of her (albeit BEAUTIFUL body) this might have worked for me, but as it stands NOPE don't like it. Also, the ponytail looks like an antenna. Sorry not sorry.

So there, you have it, my opinions on the Met Gala outfits. Any counter opinions? Do you agree with me? Who were your best and worst of China: Through the Looking Glass?

Much Love

P.s. in case you don't know what chocolate disco discs are...

  1. I must say I do agree with most of your comments! And I especially agree about naked dresses; although Kim Kardashian isn't my favourite celebrity she really did pull off the look stunningly but I feel Beyonce's take on it was really tacky!

    Great post :)

    1. I know right! It's like half the guests turned up with naked dresses! I'm so conflicted with Dakota but she knocked it out of the park there. #WCW
